i better get going

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

i think i am going to maintain the same type of structure , 2x4's top and bottom and a 4x4 in each corner, and tie it into the columns, just like I have now. Unfortunately the final design is different in depth and width so half of whats done is going to have to be redone. The left side will be a tilt out trash can. There will be a drawer under the microwave, and a door on either side. Yea, when you open the left door you’ll see part of the trash en cl osure box, but you’ll never know when the doors closed and i’m fine with that.

Unless the scaling is off that island is way too big for that space. but it looks nice.

Wouldn’t having the microwave like that hurt your knees and back? On a really cold winter day I’ll bet using the microwave like that would at least make my knees creak a little.

I imagine you see the world in architectural drawings the way Neo sees the world in code.

I think I might try that (the sandwich, not building an island).

If it works for you do it. Just looking at how far you are coming over and it looks like it is beyond the door frame, leaving you only 4ft or so inside the kitchen.

I have 8ft of space and I feel tight in mine.

They already have it like that, so they must be able to live with it. It’s increasingly common though. Some places do it for accessibility reasons, others just to create more counter space, or because they want a built-in but don’t have a good place to put one.

If you want to spend ~$1000 on a microwave, you can even get drawer microwaves, which are in theory easier to use under the counter because you access them from the top:

It is a little low, but there really isn’ t anywhere else to put it.  its not really as bad as it looks.

yea we just have nowhere else to put it. There isn’ t a ton of counter space as it is, so putting that on the counter really doesn’ t work.

its only another 6 or 8 inches deeper than what is there now. It leaves plenty of room. The oven is right across. S omeone could have the oven door open and there would still be another 4' or so.  I messed with the view cone which I think is messing with how big it looks.

at a previous job I was working on a lot of restaurant renovations. That got annoying because any time I went out for dinner I would sit there analyzing the place.

this is what everything looks liek to me

I’m imagining that spot being used for a hot tub!!!

That way you could relax in the hot tub while your wife serves you things from the kitchen.

IT WOULD BE GREAT!!!

just an FYI - Microwaves are out there that are a drawer that fits in the cabinets...that would clean the look up a bit. this is an expensive one, but I found it quick

You could always get one of the microwaves that goes over the stove. I installed one in my old house. The kitchen was super tiny and we needed the extra counter space. I t’s honestly not as hard as you would expect. Plus I was able to pick it up a used one for like $50.

i’m not too sure how easy it would be. The cabinets are not individual units, they are custom so I think that is all one piece. I’d have to cut up the box and its not something i;d want to do. The cabinets are really nice. they are old so thats why we painted them instea d of getting new ones (also we had no money for new ones).

Ahh, Gotcha. I guess I got lucky that we had cheap generic cabinets in the old house. I was able to just detach it from the wall and shift it up a few inches to make enough room for the microwave.

Kinja'd!!!

But I can see how that wouldn’t work for your situation.

I just can’t imagine having a microwave mounted so low. But hey at least you found a way to incorporate it nicely into the design of the island.

its not ideal but i didn’ t really have many other options. the island top is at 42" so we could have bar height stools so it i s maybe a little higher than if it were under a standard counter.
